construction servicesHORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING (HDD)
MGH has been performing HDD for utility companies, general contractors and private parties for 8 years in Northern California. Most of our HDD work has been for AT&T crossing and paralleling State highways, County and City roads. Some recent HDD work involving State of California Department of Transportation was performed in Pt. Arena installing a pressurized sewer line, for AT&T at Ten Mile Bridge in Fort Bragg to place AT&T 4" conduits along and across Hwy 1 for a bridge relocation and expansion, at Navarro Ridge Road and Hwy 1 we bored a PG&E 4" across the Hwy 1 for the utility to service customers on the ocean side of the highway, also at the same location at a later date we bored both PG&E and telephone across Hwy 1 to place a 4" conduit for each of the utilities, on hwy 20 Fort Bragg for AT&T we placed 12in steel casings at two highway crossing locations, further up Hwy 20 we bored in 800’ of 2" HDPE crossing the highway twice, across highway 32 in Chico, CA we bored 40 feet and placed 24 inch steel casing, on Bruce road in Chico, CA we bored across Bruce Rd. and placed six 4 inch conduits for AT&T, on Hwy 89 in Sattley, CA for AT&T we bored 1200 feet of 2" HDPE also crossing the highway twice, on Hwy 70 in Chilcoot, CA for AT&T we bored across highway 70 placing 2-2" HDPE’s, and we bored across Hwy 395 at Halleluiah junction and placed 1-4 inch steel for AT&T. Traffic signal conduits have been installed at various locations throughout California. We have done many more bores for various customers to install HDPE gas lines, water lines, sewer lines, electrical lines, storm drains and communications and video lines. This work has been in urban cities and rural areas too. We cross federal freeways, state highways, county, city and private roads, creeks, rivers, golf courses, hill sides and canyons. HDD construction allows substructures to be placed without the surface being disturbed so; the expensive landscaping, driveways and roads that need to be crossed now become more feasible. This low impact construction method makes conventional excavation methods a second choice since HDD eliminates or minimizes most traffic control needs and restoration of disturbed surfaces is minimized if not eliminated.
Vacuum excavation is also one of our favorite methods of performing so many functions, our vacuums trucks can locate substructures in minutes after arriving on a job site with minimal impact to the surface conditions. No need to have a backhoe and dump truck with a spotter and operator busting out payment and then digging cautiously to expose some substructure. We can pull up with a vacuum truck, knock a 6 inch diameter hole in the surface and vacuum a hole down to the substructure within minutes to determine it exact location. We can install ropes or mule tape in conduits in minutes, we can clean the vault that has filled up with debris in minutes, we can dewater a job site and transport the spoils in minutes, we can clean out the storm drain inlets in minutes, and the list goes on and on. Call us to see if we can solve your problems with our vacuum techniques.
MGH also performs conventional backhoe or excavator construction when the conditions warrant but our first choice is HDD. Drill inventory includes Dtch Witch JT920L & JT2020 MACH 1, see link ditchwitch.com/trenchless/directional-drills/JT2020-mach-1
PIPE BURSTING
If you need to increase capacity of your existing substructures then pipe bursting is a great way to do it. Many factors are considered when capacities are reached, is there room for another facility next to the existing one, cost to your organization and inconvenience to the community are just a few. Pipe bursting is simple and inexpensive solution to replacement of or adding additional pipelines. You can increase capacity or replace a defective pipeline without all the headaches of new construction. Call us to explain the benefits of pipe bursting and we can show you the monumental savings. The type of pipeline replacement does not matter, the technology is here and the savings can be yours! See link ditchwitch.com/trenchless/pipe-bursters/PR95
PRODUCTS INSTALLED
The list of products that MGH installs continues to expand; conduits to transport water, electrical, communications, video, sanitary systems, storm drains, gas lines, steel and HDPE & PVC casings or without conduit we place cable and/or wire. If you need something placed in the ground and do not want to disturb the surface, call us and we’ll make it happen.
TOOLS
Horizontal Direction Drills (HDD), Pipe Bursting, Service Trucks with all types of welding capabilities and mobile crane attached. Skid steers, track machines and Vacuum excavator trucks, high end substructure electronic tracking equipment and locating tools and most of all highly skill personnel.
SAFETY
Safety is paramount to MGH and we have great record when it comes to ensuring the public and our personnel are protected. MGH personnel all wear DOT approved apparel while in or near the work zone. All safety warning devices are set prior to any construction equipment is off loaded and in the least we follow the California MUTCD and Standard Plans for Temporary Traffic Control Systems and policies when setting traffic control warning devices. We always contact and meet with the local permitting authority to ensure that the local conditions are understood and followed.
We do our due diligence by "day lighting" all known substructures in our path however, unknown substructures are always a concern so we take the extra effort to contact all parties to determine if any unknown substructures may be present. Safety due to electrical strike is one of our biggest concerns, all HDD related personnel wear 750KV boots and the HDD operator has a warning alarm that signals upon electrical strike, the machine automatically shuts down and the operator throws a rubber mat out from the work station. When the alarm beeps twice the operator steps off the HDD unit and onto the rubber mat without touching the HDD unit. This along with the 750KV boots is the most protection that can be offered to HDD operators and trackers.
COMMUNICATIONS PLAN
MGH utilizes two way radios with a unique private channel for its onsite personnel to communicate and cell phones for incoming and outgoing calls. When situations allow the communications’ between the bore operator and tracker are done with hand signals, otherwise the two way radios are utilized. Customers and emergency personnel are always on our contact list for every job we perform
EMERGENCY PLAN
MGH emergency plan should an event occur is to contact local authorities and advise of the situation if necessary demand any emergency response that may be required. For smaller issues MGH carries a current and complete First Aid Kit to deliver first aid to the MGH crew and 10 additional people. For operational emergencies such as hitting an unmarked substructure, MGH would notify the owner of the substructure and assist with mitigating the situation if safe to do so. If not safe to remain on site MGH would evacuate the site and notify the authorities and owners i.e. in case of a gas leak or chemical spill. Our emergency plan is not just conceptual, we have had a instance when a non-related party to the job site miss judged a corner and overturned his truck loaded with chemicals. MGH was well prepared for the event and notified the authorities and assisted in notifying the local residences of the need to evacuate.
DRILLING FLUID MANAGEMENT PLAN (DFMP)
MGH utilizes large Vacuum trucks to clean up spoils from drilling operations. Each HDD site is different and requires a unique DFMP based on the conditions of the job. MGH prepares a DFMP for each project to mitigate all concerns of spoil disposal and develops fluid viscosity plans based on soil reports for the site utilizing the latest tools from equipment manufacturers and bore mud producers. See link for fluid formulator ditchwitch.com/resources/drilling-fluid-formulator
TRACKING & LOCATING SYSTEMS
MGH utilizes manufacture suggested tracking systems based on the HDD system to be utilized for the project. Our electronic locating equipment is state of the art and calibrated on a regular basis. See link ditchwitch.com/electronics/electronic-guidance-systems/752-tracker
MONITORING GROUND SURFACE MOVEMENT
MGH when required will set a reference elevation pin within site of the proposed bore path. Using our laser levels we record grades at stations across the bore path prior to the bore. Upon completion of the bore we record the grades at the same stations again. We then compare the two grades to determine if any changes have occurred.
